Pregnancy forced Jessica to drop out of high school a year before graduation. She went back to school to get her GED and began working part-time at a hospital. It eventually developed into a full-time, low-income job.
However, Jessica still faced the pressure and worry of living paycheck to paycheck. And it made getting child care for her son difficult.
Forty-five percent of households in Florida struggle to afford basic household necessities. For most, child care would be their largest-single monthly expenditure, higher than housing, transportation or food.
That changed when she applied for the School Readiness Program offered through the Early Learning Coalition. Once accepted, her son began receiving early learning childhood education from a quality child care provider.
Not only did it improve her son’s chances at educational success, it gave Jessica the opportunity to take college classes while she works fulltime. Now she’s seeking a degree Health Information Management.
